Looking back
Looking back....
Moving to an unfamiliar country alone at a young age probably has not happened to many people, but I am privileged enough to say it has to me. The decision to leave my home behind was a huge step for me at the age of 14 as I set off to attend a U.S. boarding school. Initially when arriving, the culture and way of life was much different from what I was used to, this caused pressure and was tough to deal with. However, the most challenging part of the move, was that no longer was my family close by. Adding to the challenges, I also had to learn to live on my own, as well as time management and leadership skills. Despite having to undergo all this in the move, I was provided with an opportunity which helped me learn how to be dedicated to working hard in school, sports and establishing myself.
When arriving initially, the sheer excitement and curiosity of seeing a new place made saying goodbye to my family easy, but only after a few hours of them dropping me off did it sink in of how hard it was truly going to be. For if wasn't for the people that I met over the years that helped me grow and learn, I might not of been able to overcome it. These people helped encourage me into trying out for varsity sports, student council, and new sports and services. With my own will power and this little encouragement I was beginning to step out of my comfort zone, but everything was still happening quickly.
As time progressed, it continued to get more difficult, as more and more challenges began to appear for me to overcome. I continued to ask myself “Why am I doing this to myself?” and “Is it necessary to go through this pain?”. I would answer these questions by continually reminding myself that I did this to make me better, and to improve and challenge myself. I reminded myself that without a little pain, there will be no gain. I still had no idea of the obstacles I would have to go through and overcome. I also had no idea how fast my four years at boarding school would go by and I now appreciate all time given and don’t take any moments for granted.
Today as, I reflect back on my experience, I can easily say that moving away to boarding school gave me an opportunity to succeed in life. As learning to go the extra in everything I did, no matter if it was school work, games and practice, student council or community service, it has successfully prepared me for college and I will forever be a lifelong learner.
