Change
Change …is the way of the world we live in. The question is for the better or worse?
Change is one thing, and changing for the better is another. Which one do you choose?
With today’s world promoting change and letting it happen sometimes worries me. Our world has advanced in technology, globalization and the number of people. Overall today’s pace is fast, and with fast pace comes sometimes forgetfulness of little details. With increasing amount of people and connections, rise of social media, and opinions, we have become more empowered individually. Which brings me to my topic of change for the worse or better in today’s world of leadership.
As we face change, leadership is one that is impacted in my mind. If I could highlight on significant change it would be that we have forgotten what it takes to be a leader.
There are too many leaders to list and their achievements, but one thing I see them having in common is knowing who you are. This is not to be taking incorrectly by knowing your achievements, success, points, games played, etc. It is knowing who you are to better yourself and others. Being able to self assess, believe in yourself, show direction, effort to listen, and sharing passion and inspiration are all things that have become overlooked in 2017. It is more than making difficult decisions, sharing your opinions, being the best, competing, and having authority.
We as a whole care too much about reputation and not enough about character. Character over reputation is lost and if you don’t agree, join a team, a workplace, or even a family. Caring too much what people think and not who they are or what they can do is missing. Character is the ability to overcome challenges, and make sacrifices. Whereas reputation is caring about YOU.
Compassion.. where has it gone? Love is greater than the highs and lows. Being concerned for others before yourself. Compassion can be lacked because of ignorance, usually by children, because they are not aware of everything that goes on in life. There is no excuse for teenagers, and young adults to lack compassion as much as our world does. We lack compassion to much for our own human kind, for gays, transgenders, women, friends, family, teammates.. it is never ending.
Courage is another aspect slowly shrinking in our lives from not being mentally or physically strong. Having to face struggle with pain and grief but overcome it with happiness. This grit word has been confused with soft and self centered.
Overall, change is not always for the better, and in this case I believe change has been for the worse. In today’s complex world, ever-changing environment, leaders with integrity, vision and commitment offer timeless effort to their team. But today, the best leaders are leading through influence, and reputation which is why change is not always for the better.
